Genesis and Establishment of Bangladesh Agricultural University

Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) was established as the nation's only university of its kind in 1961 on the basis of recommendations made by the Commission of National Education and the Food and Agriculture Commission in 1959. The Scheme for the establishment of BAU was finalized on 8 Hune 1961 and its ordinance was promulgated on 18 August 1961. With the appointment of its first Vice-Chancellor, the university formally came into existance on 2 September 1961 and started functioning with the College of Animal Husbandry and Vetenery Science at Mymensingh as its nucleus. The main task of the university is to tone up the quality and standard of higher agricultural education and to produce first rate agriculturists, agricultural scientists and technologiests for shouldering the responsibilities of agricultural development of the country. To achieve the objectives over 90 percent of the recurring budget and the entire development fund come from the government through University Grants Commission (UGC).

The University is mandated to tone up the quality and standard of higher agriculture education and to produce first rate agriculturists, agricultural scientists and technologists for shouldering the responsibilities of agricultural development of the country.

The working missions of the University are :

i) to provide higher learning in all branches of agricultural sciences as a profession-based education;

ii) to conduct basic and applied research on various aspects of agricultural problems faced by farmers, change-agents and agro-industrialists with a view to recommending possible measures in dealing with them;

iii) to organize and supervise extension and related nation-building activities at different levels and in different forms;

iv) to provide training for personnel of different government and non-government organizations and also for farmers and farm-leaders on various aspects of agriculture and rural development; and

v) to provide facilities for bilateral and multilateral cooperation and collaboration with institutes or organizations within and outside Bangladesh. (See, Flow-chart: 1).

Major Research Areas of the Department

Anatomy of lab. & zoo animals, avian anatomy, endocrine anatomy, histology of digestive & respiratory system, blood, vascular & lymphatic system and endocrine & urogenital system. Major Research Areas of the Department

Reproductive physiology and endocrine glands, radiobiology including receptors assay, physiology of digestion, absorption & metabolism, avian physiology, cardiovascular physiology, neurophysiology, membrane transport, transport of macromolecules and nutrient from GIT to brain, immunophysiology, natural products and physiology, renal physiology, vitamins and minerals, immuno-genetics, physio-pathology of bioactive substances, animal behavior and zoo animal physiology.

In 1998 the institute was converted into a full-fledged university.

BSMRAU Research


Research programmes of the BSMRAU have primary focus on local problems within the National Agricultural Research System framework. The results of research at BSMRAU are directly applicable to the agricultural development of the country. The emphasis is placed on basic research. The teachers in various departments are actively involved in research. The research and related activities of each department are coordinated by the Research Coordinator. There are ten research laboratories with modern sophisticated equipment for conducting both applied and basic research in agricultural and social sciences. Additionally, field research facilities and a meteorological station are available to support research activities at the University.

Dormitory

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), an exceptional agricultural institution for higher studies running on course credit system, has been offering Postgraduate degrees both at MS and PhD level since its inception. The university has also started Graduate program (Bachelor degree) since January 2005. This is absolutely apolitical residential university having two Dormitories (Halls) for both Postgraduate and Undergraduate students. Under Postgraduate Dormitory (Hall) there are three separate wings namely male wing, female wing and family wing. In the family wing only the married PhD students are allowed to stay with their family members according to seniority. Besides, the female students of BS program are residing within the female wing of Postgraduate Dormitory (Hall) premises. Presently the extension of construction work of female wing is going on to accommodate more female students.

    Postgraduate Students’ Dormitory (Hall) is staffed with one Office Assistant cum Computer Operator, two Senior Cook, one Cook, six Senior Dormitory Attendant, one Senior MLSS and one Sweeper.

1-Dining management:

There are two messes, one in male wing and another in female wing of the Dormitory (Hall) for lunch and dinner for the male and female students respectively. A students’ participatory dining committee runs the mess under the supervision of Dormitory (Hall) administration. This system provides standard and quality foods with affordable price as fixed by the dining committee.

2-Religious activities:

There is a prayer room in the Dormitory (Hall) used for five-time prayer. Besides, many other religious festivals (Eid-e-Miladunnabi, Sworrshwati puja etc) are observed in the Dormitory (Hall) each year.

3-Other activities and facilities:

Both indoors (like table tennis, carom, chess, card and badminton) and out doors (cricket, football, volleyball) games are arranged in the Dormitory (Hall) common room and out door play ground every year. Some cultural activities are also observed in the Dormitory (Hall). There is a separate newspaper reading room where nine dailies and two periodical magazines are available for the students. There is a separate laundry room and a corner shop in male and female wings for having break fast and other daily necessary items. Besides, students are provided a marvelous television in a big common room for their amusement.
